Shocking, absolutely shocking that this is going on right under our noses and in Irvine too! If this type of behaviour is prevelant in Irvine, than how bad must it be in other neighborhoods with less educated people and less financially secure people? It is important that we give our children a strong belief system in themselves as well as G-d. It is important that we teach our children how wrong it is to hurt others with prejudgess and ungly remarks. It is important that we teach our children to be strong and proud and to ignore the derogatory remarks made about them and to understand there is nothing wrong with them or their religion.

Very sorry about what happened....and what continues to occur on a daily basis somewhere in the world. Intolerance and injustice to ONE, is intolerance and injustice to ALL. Very Best Wishes....

i was lucky to hear Clyve Lawton 3 times and each one was a most enjoyable, interesting and informative evening. Each topic was made filled out with both historical and geographical facts that put a new light on the situation. Also there was a thread of humor that lightened the evening. Hopefully we will have the pleasure of more visits from Dr. Lawton and from other scholars as well. RD

tough i know that neshamah carlebach has a beautiful voice and i know that her father sholomo carlebach had a beautiful voice it really disturbs me to read about what a spiritual and amazing person sholomo carlebach was. He carries a legacy that should not be recognized.
I grew up in new jersey with a rabbi that worked with sholomo carlebach and i personally knew sholomo. I spent more shabbot with him then i'd like to remember.
i remember his group circles, and singing, "The Whole World is Waiting to Sing a Song of Shabbat"........and the others as well. ANd though his music was beautiful I also remember his glaring eyes as he undressed all the females with them. I remember his loose hands and inappropriate hugs. I remember his daughter being with him as well. I remember the questions about what went on at his camp. Sholomo was inappropriate with many of us. We should not uplift someone that has been qustioned in such a way. Many women have come forward with information regarding his inappropriate touching and hugs, and yet, all that gets mentioned is how wonderful his music was. How spiritual he was. What a great man he was. I find it appalling that people don't remember who he was, what he represented or what he did. Though i love to go to shul, and i still find some peace in religion I will never forget the pain that sholomo carlebach brought to me and to the others who attended his weekend retreats, his crazy groups i used to call them. he should not be touted as wonderful and though his music is beautiful nothing attached to a man like him should even be shared.

Hi Milly,
I stumbled on this by accident and am greatly impressed. Your work and vision is wonderful and you can be very proud of yourself. I know that I am.
I wonder if you are aware that Dr. Matrin Graffman in Fullerton is a cousin. He is the grandson of Eva Satinsky, your father-in-law's sister.

The statement that this company is the only OC Kosher cater to be able to use the Nixon Library is very misleading. They may be the only OC kosher caterer but they are not the only Kosher caterer. I was married here in June 2010 and used GOT KOSHER INC As my caterer from LA. So you are not limited on your Kosher Caterers to be able to have a kosher wedding at Nixon Library.

Next time you're buying Shabbat candles, pay careful attention. It's likely you'll find a box of the Rokeach colored Hanukkah candles next to them.

For grocery store fun, walk up to a sales person in June and ask them "Where are the Christmas decorations?". After they give you the obligatory answer (while looking at you like you're an idiot) "We only sell them during the holidays", ask them "Why, then, do you sell Hanukkah candles year-round?"

It's a very interesting point, that synagogues could/should benefit from the technology trends. It would be very useful in helping them find new members or congregation participants by establishing a presence in the internet social world. On tools like Facebook, they can promote their events using web advertising specifically targeted to local Jews, and maintain interest and awareness of activities using tools like Facebook groups.

This is a fantastic article and very insightful. Being a memeber of this demographic and also being a very involved individulal in my Jewish community I hope this article will attract the attention of current leadership within Synagogues . It is vital for us to engage this younger demographic for us as a people to continue. Rachel Schiff brings up a very strong point that it's hard to afford to be Jewish with membership, Community events, and even High Holiday tickets and the economy that we're currently in.

I would really like this article to spark the direction of synagogue's attention to engage their younger demographics.

It's such a pleasure to read about independent minyanim. I am a firm believer that the Jewish world should embrace alternative models, not because it's inherently better, but because it's better for SO MANY PEOPLE.

I like that JBN is more of an informal get-together. Networking should be about making connections within the Jewish community. It shouldn't be too high pressure. I also really like that they offer seminars. It is a business network, after all. It should be there to help your business. So, to me, it sounds like it has a great mixture of a casual environment with real learning and improvement opportunities.

This year's line-up is wonderful - but, then, every year's show is special. Chemers always provides excellent services to its clients - from finding us what we want even if it is not in the Gallery at the time, creative framing options, and a great selection of gifts for ourselves or others. Its always a treat to be treated to outstanding customer care.

Wonderful article! Karen puts on a wonderful event at her gallery and I'm glad to see it get coverage. She is truly the most generous business owner I've seen, as she says "yes" to any philanthropic request. I can't wait for the event!

Susan, I am also a Mendelson descendant working on our family tree. I do have some information for you and I would love to get copies of what photos you have and I have some photos for you, but mostly my side of the family. I have that Clara was born in 1904 in SJC but I didn't know at the Inn! I believe that Max (a/k/a Marks) was Edward's father. I have that Edward's wife was Constance Conception Forbes whose mother was Maria Luisa Olvera, whose family Olvera Street in Los Angeles is named after. I'm not 100% certain on all this; it's a work in progress but I'm fairly certain on most. How can we get in touch without putting our email addresses on this public forum?

My family has been a member of Shir Ha-Ma'alot for 10 years and I can affirm that everything in this article is so true. I always leave SHM feeling better than when I arrived. From the music to the message, it is a beautiful and meaningful place to be. One of my favorite parts is being involved on committees. You get to do what you enjoy doing, spend time with amazing people, and learn and grow as a person. I love Rabbi Steinberg and Cantor Shikler, and I'm already feeling very connected to our new Rabbi Leah Lewis too!
